It’s hard to believe that it’s been almost two years since I first reviewed the Lawyaw document automation platform. And, let me tell you, the Lawyaw team has not wasted a minute. To the delight of users nationwide, and by learning from users, they have expanded the core feature set. With over 350,000 documents created, the platform isn’t just being used. Law firms are diving in and quickly becoming power users.

Lawyaw Word Add-In (Template Builder)
If you’ve ever had to manually program a Microsoft Word document with merge tags, you know how painful that process can be. That is why over 70 percent of document automation tools go unused and are not implemented. Seriously, how many attorneys do you know who code documents as a hobby?
Lawyaw’s Word Add-In is a massive win because of the way they’ve approached the usability of the product. First, they use visual coding. A sidebar on the right-hand side of the screen expands to offer data sets that are available to merge into any single or set of documents. You can easily find information you have collected through intake forms, Clio standard or custom fields and then add them to your master template. At the same time, all styles, headers and formatting are preserved which is something most document templates leave behind. Some great examples of this capability are court documents, firm-specific stationery, agreements and contracts. There is no need to shy away from automating documents with specialized headers, fonts or style sets anymore. This is a massive timesaver for document production in heavy practice-area firms!
Progressive Data Retention
There is a powerful new enhancement to Lawyaw that collects new data, and builds a database of your custom fields, as you add new information across all your templates. The impact on the daily life of users is that this enhancement increases the power and value of Lawyaw the more you use it — especially for Clio users —because the more documents you create, the more information is saved back to the associated matter. Duplicate data entry is eliminated. One master case file that is automatically updated is created with all of the recent documents and intake information.
Advanced Clio Integration
Lawyaw’s popularity with Clio users was apparent from day one of their integration. Feedback from users, and direct input from the Clio team, poured into a version two release of the integration and made it the most advanced document creation tool in the Clio app store suite.
To create a document directly from a Clio matter, simply follow the new path with complete visibility and access to your Lawyaw Template Library. This is especially powerful for users of Clio Grow and Manage, as they can create documents right from an intake form. The simple process is completed in the following steps:
- View templates
- Choose template
- Select a matter
- Select a contact
- See all Clio fields
- Edit info if necessary
Given that so many Clio users run Mac-friendly practices, the combination of Lawyaw and Clio provides them with tools that only PC users had access to previously. The ability to generate several documents directly from a matter, and not just one, continues to extend the power of both tools across any law firm, from solo to scaling.
Importing Data from any Source
One of my favorite Lawyaw features has always been the ability to apply data sets to multiple documents at once. Now, you can acquire those data sets from a variety of sources.
For firms who use a form tool on their website, Clio Grow or Clio Manage and Lawyaw intake forms continue to use what works for you. Lawyaw will map the data sets into your document template(s) from wherever the original location, finally centralizing all of your drafts in one place and, best of all, standardizing your data.
By maintaining a master database of client information in Lawyaw or Clio, you can generate entire document sets with just a few clicks. You can send questionnaires, Clio Grow forms or follow-up forms to clients and then merge the new information seamlessly into your documents. You will be confident that your work product will always be up to date and free of errors.
For growing firms, Lawyaw is rapidly accommodating to your needs. Administrators or support staff can create standardized documents for the firm by using Word Add-In and then upload them to the team’s master library. With this new hierarchy of roles, the entire firm can leverage sets of document templates to reduce errors and increase the overall speed at which they can deliver services to clients.
