We’ve all heard that as humans we learn differently. But, have you ever considered that we also work differently?

After visiting with and training hundreds of lawyers I can assure you, we don’t all work the same way. Each of us has a method, a mental process or a routine we use to map out and manage our day.

Rocket Matter offers a path for how you want to work.

(Fleetwood Mac’s – Go Your Own Way, plays in the background.)

With Rocket Matter, two dashboard options are presented at the time of login. You have the option to choose a Calendar or Task view layout as your home screen. It doesn’t matter what role in a law firm you have, it’s how you work best that should determine this decision.

For many rainmakers, the calendar dictates life. You sandwich tasks and client work in between the main events of the day. When you wake up and where you go to first, and what you think about before you go to sleep…these decisions are almost always directly related to the calendar.

If you deliver a more transactional or document based service, such as Estate Planning or Business Law, your day may be best managed with a Task view. It’s not just about keeping up, but staying ahead. Many professionals don’t realize that a to-do list for the day doesn’t give enough insight to the mountain of work waiting for you around the corner. By laying every task out in plain sight, it becomes much more apparent when you need to delegate or hire part time help.

Now, that you have matched your view to your work pattern, let’s get into the meat of Rocket Matter’s application.

Rocket Matter debuted in February 2008, and has provided comprehensive time, billing and practice management tools for its growing user-base ever since. In February and May of 2017, the team overhauled the entire user interface with two major updates.

The first major update is that they partnered with a new payment processing service called LexCharge. What’s exceptional about this addition is that most providers rely on the integration with industry standard Law Pay. By adding Lex Charge, the team not only has offered another major payment processing option for lawyers, they also eliminated manual steps and improved the overall payment processing experience.

Rocket Matter lets you set up recurring billing and payment plans. It notifies you when a payment fails, and it automatically sends failure receipts to members of the team so that clients don’t slip into collections.

I want to zero in on this feature because with almost every solo law firm I have counseled, Accounts Receivable is a massive problem. Mainly because by the time you find out a client is past due, make time to chase them down, and leave 100 voicemails, it’s already too late and you’ve been delivering services for more than an extra month. Billing is a pain in the you know what. So, anything that can further automate that process with lower fees so you keep more of your billable revenue to pay yourself and run your business is a win in my book.

It’s no coincidence that Rocket Matter was one of the first legal practice management software providers to take this leap. In their early days, they won an award for the best time and billing application on the market. Custom billing rates by client or associate, automatic accounting that pays off balances, and on page reporting for matter balances make a huge difference for firms that must monitor an IOLTA account. Advanced invoicing tools such as taxes, interest, discounts, terms and more make it very clear to understand what needs to be paid and by when.

On the matter management front, the ‘let’s create a feature for the client before they know they will need it’ approach is evident everywhere in Rocket Matter. Default matter templates and task lists are pretty standard these days, but how many applications let you retro-actively apply them to all of the cases in your account? When attorneys buy practice management software it’s usually not until the sixty or ninety-day mark that they really dig in and start to use it. At which point, they realize they should have been using a custom field or automated task lists. This simple but powerful features allows them to keep their matters uniform and complete.

Rocket Matter’s Many Integrations.

Rocket Matter employs an advisory group of beta user clients who try out features long before they make it to the open market. By doing so their integrations (I lost count of how many) are road-tested, never launching before they are truly ready.

“Wow!” moments in the demo include a beautifully-executed partnership with Ruby Receptionists. Messages are added directly into your account with the total time of the call, an audio file and client information. Another deep integration is with Office 365, one of the best integrations with Office 365 I’ve seen yet. You can sync documents to Rocket Matter while recording the amount of time you spent on each one. The same is true with their QuickBooks online connection—seamlessly passing data between the two applications helps you avoid double entry.

One area I would like to point out beyond the integrations I’ve listed is that Rocket Matter has countless more. If you are considering Rocket Matter as an option for your practice, take the extra time to talk through scenarios on how a specific case type or work scenario would be handled in the software. With almost ten years of feature development, one of Rocket Matter’s most powerful tools could be one you haven’t even heard about.

Great Support.

Last but never least is support. Given their early start as a leader in the market place, Rocket Matter has invested an unbelievable amount of time and money into education. Not just on the software side, where you will find some of the friendliest most amazing people I have ever met, like Kimaree Beyrent who was the first employee hired by Rocket Matter CEO and founder, Larry Port. She now heads up customer service and training for the organization making sure no stone is left unturned. On the practice management side, they have an entire library of resources for practice management, marketing, billing, and even health and wellness to keep you and your law firm fit.

I have been lucky enough to get to know the Rocket Matter family for almost a decade now. I’ve shared dinners with the team at ABA TECHSHOW and have watched them stay steadfast and focused on delivering a great product. As the company has grown, one characteristic has remained the same: They have never stopped innovating (or being one of the coolest groups to hang out with, for that matter!) Check Rocket Matter out for yourself, and don’t forget to ask if a feature exists. It probably does.
